Report: Blackpool 1 Morecambe 2

A 75th minute strike from Alex Baptiste wasn't enough to rescue Blackpool as The Seasiders lost 2-1 to Morecambe in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

The League Two side survived a late assault on their goal to book a place in the next draw for the competition, having scored in both halves to take a 2-0 lead.

The visitors started the game brightly, clearly pumped up for the Lancashire derby with The Seasiders. They took the lead inside six minutes when striker Lewis Alessandra opened fire from 18-yards and drilled his effort past Matt Gilks.

Buoyed by the goal, Kevin Ellison tried his luck from distance in an effort to quickly double Morecambe’s lead but this time Matt Gilks was positioned well to save.

An overlap of three on two led to Jordan Burrow then being played clean through but he fired over as Matt Gilks quickly rushed out of his goal.

An uncharacteristic performance by Blackpool in the opening stages, Matt Phillips mustered The Seasiders’ first real attempt on goal when he struck the post after 27 minutes.

The chance sparked a bit more life in the performance, with Tom Ince denied moments later by Barry Roche following a great ball over the top from Stephen Crainey.

The Shrimps continued to push forward in an effort to score again but Crainey was equally adept to dealing with a clipped ball to the back post.

Manager Ian Holloway made a change at the interval to try and turn things around, Elliot Grandin replacing Ludovic Sylvestre.

Pool started with added impetus, Matt Phillips forcing Roche into an early save. All the play was now in the Morecambe half, with some good defending squeezing out Gary Taylor-Fletcher from connecting with Elliot Grandin’s header across goal. The striker then glanced the ball just wide of the post as the momentum continued to build.

Against the run of play The Shrimps doubled their lead, Andrew Fleming latched on to a through ball from Andrew Wright and remained composed to slot past Gilks.

Tiago Gomes was quickly thrust into action for Angel Martinez following the goal as The Seasiders looked to find some way back into the game.

Morecambe keeper Barry Roche pulled off another fine save to deny Taylor-Fletcher as the home side stared at an early exit from the Capital One Cup. Kevin Ellison burst through on goal for the visitors but his strike was fired straight at Gilks.

Tom Barkhuizen then became Blackpool’s third and final change when he replaced Gary Taylor-Fletcher with 15 minutes remaining. The Seasiders pulled a goal back within minutes of the substitution as Alex Baptiste bundled the ball home inside the box.

BLACKPOOL 1 MORECAMBE 2

The atmosphere, hindered somewhat by the sound of aeroplanes flying over Bloomfield Road, suddenly lifted with 13 minutes of normal time to play. Defender Ian Evatt joined Barkhuizen upfront and headed over the bar.
A stunning effort from Matt Phillips looked like bringing Blackpool level with a minute to go but the winger struck the post for the second time in the game.

Some resilient and dogged defending was seeing the League Two side hold on for the victory, which they eventually did following four minutes of added time.
