Report: Preston 1 Blackpool 0

Blackpool were dealt a cruel blow late on in the opening round of the Capital One Cup as Tom Clarke's header won the game for Preston despite Blackpool dominating the game for large periods.

Paul Ince handed full debuts to Michael Chopra and Jack Robinson and it was the man signed from Ipswich who nearly put Steven Davies through early on, but the striker strayed offside.

Both sides were guilty of giving the ball away and it was very much a stop-start opening as a few niggling fouls crept into both sets of teams' play.

Thomas Ince had his first threatening moment of the game after around 15 minutes, cutting in from the left flank and squeezing between two players only to scuff his right footed shot, leaving Declan Rudd with an easy save to make.

With 30 minutes on the clock The Seasiders began to enjoy some longer passages of possession in the opponents half, but struggled to make any inroads into the box, mainly due to Preston's organisation.

With five minutes of the half to go it was Ince who was running through the Preston defence again but after showing Paul Huntington a clean pair of heels he cut across his shot and it flew wide of the left hand upright.

The offside flag was to be Blackpool's pitfall again a minute before the interval as Ince went half a yard too early as he got on the end of Robinson's low whipped cross from the left.

Two minutes into the second period and Chopra was inches away from connecting with Ince's cutback from the byline but the ball just evaded his right boot.

Five minutes later and it was The Seasiders on the attack; a patient build up resulted in Martinez stealing into the box only to see his downward header go just past the post.

Preston had their first real chance of the half in the 60th minute but Tom Clarke's header looped over Gilks' crossbar.

Straight up the other end and Broadfoot was the one to get his head on the ball in a dangerous position this time, but he was unable to divert his effort goalwards from Ince's deep free-kick.

In the 68th minute the hosts almost took the lead when Iain Hume latched onto a long ball and from an acute angle hit a fine left-foot volley across Gilks, but the keeper tipped the effort around the post for a corner.

Seven minutes later and it was the Blackpool fans on their feet as they came within centimetres of getting their noses in front as Chopra met Basham's cross only to see his header bounce into the turf and onto the roof of the net.

The game had come to life all of a sudden and The Lilywhites were next to threaten, but a fine saving block from MacKenzie meant Hume's low shot didn't threaten the goal.

With seven minutes to go some great defending from Robinson set Blackpool away, which culminated in Ince winning a corner. From the resulting dead ball, MacKenzie met the ball at pace but ten yards out but it flew just over.

In the 87th minute Preston earned themselves a free-kick around 35 yards, which was whipped into the far post and met firmly by Tom Clarke who saw his header fly past Gilks and into the back of the net.

GOAL: PRESTON 1-0 Blackpool

The Seasiders continued to push and probe, but the ball just wouldn't find the back of the net and it would be Preston would have their name in the hat for the Capital One Cup second round.
