6-2 Victory Over Irlam

With the postponement of the Morecambe-Tranmere game, the Ladies took full advantage to go top of the table with a 6-2 home victory over Irlam this weekend.

They had, however, to come from behind in doing so, with Irlam opening the scoring in the first minute of the game after capitalising on a half clearance and indecisive play from Pool for a tap in.

Despite Kilner, May and Dillon having efforts it was Mac Barlow who was to obtain the Pool equaliser in the 18th minute with her top corner finish. Charlotte Gill then tested the Irlam keeper with her free-kick and gave Pool the lead with her subsequent attempt from the edge of the box. Dillon then forced a good save with Kilner also testing the visiting keeper.

Just before the half-hour mark striker Dillon was to extend the lead when intercepting a fortuitous ball back to the keeper. In their attempt to reduce the deficit, Irlam had an effort that hit the post and a subsequent effort from distance over the bar, but it was Pool who were to obtain the next goal through Emma Ambrose.

In the second-half the first action saw Gill play a ball down the line for May but her effort on goal went wide. Kilner then forced a good save from the Irlam keeper. The next goal was to come just before the hour mark, with Ambrose doing well to retain the ball and play through Barlow for her brace.

In the 75th minute Irlam scored their second of the game, pouncing on a back pass to make the score 5-2. Barlow, Bradshaw and Banner all had attempts to restore the four-goal advantage but it was substitute Cross who did so after latching on to a defence splitting Gill through ball.

Team: Findlay, May, Jones, Banner, Oldfield, Turnbull, Kilner, Ambrose, Barlow, Dillon, Gill

Subs: Cross, Bradshaw, Perrett.

The Ladies have a break from league action now with an FA Cup fixture next week away at City of Manchester, followed by a County Cup game against Blackburn the following Sunday. Their league campaign continues on Sunday 28 October at Preston Sports Arena against PNE Ladies.
