Double Header See Ladies Get Four Points

Due to a fixture backlog the Ladies played a double header against Northwich Vixens, having home advantage with the games being played at Wyre Villa.

They claimed four of the six available points, earning themselves a draw in the first 30-minute each-way game and then going on to win the second by two goals to nil.

The points mean Pool retained top spot in the league, but with only two games remaining they must now rely heavily on other results going in their favour to finish the season as champions, due to others having games in hand.

The Seasiders had the lion’s share of opportunities from the first whistle with a Lauren Oatley ball through for Rhiannon Davies being gathered by the visiting keeper and an Oatley cross being put just wide by Sian Dillon.

Shortly after, Claire Kilner’s attempt fell to Dillon who finished well to give Pool a deserved lead with ten minutes on the clock.

Pool pressed for further goals with The Vixens ‘keeper palming an Oatley header away from danger, with the defence then clearing their lines at the second attempt as Charlotte Banner tried to pierce the backline.

Just before the interval, Dillon was prevented from grabbing her second of the game following good defending by the keeper and her backline.

Into the second half an Oatley corner was headed wide by Banner with the alert keeper out well to clear in front of Dillon.

Charlotte Gill then saw her effort go just wide of the target with the keeper again narrowing the angle well in front of Jenni McGill and then Kilner.

With Lisa Lambshead replacing Davies and a quarter of the game remaining, the Ladies extended their lead through Dillon as she headed home Oatley’s corner, despite the best efforts of the defender on the line.

To their credit the visitors persevered and their efforts were to be rewarded. With eight minutes of the game remaining an effort from distance was not closed down and found its way into the back of the net.

Searching to re-establish the two-goal lead Dillon saw efforts gathered and Oatley had an attempt on target.

But in the last minute of the game The Vixens equalised when a corner was played into a packed goalmouth, and in the ensuing melee the ball was drilled home. At the restart the referee blew the final whistle meaning Pool had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Following a 30 minute break the second game of the afternoon kicked off; a game won by Pool thanks to a brace from Oatley.

The Vixens had the first of the opportunities with an effort on target and a subsequent attempt over.

Pool then had a good chance with Jones finding Dillon with a ball over the top, but the striker saw her shot hit the bar.

Mac Barlow was the next to have an effort on goal, but her strike was cleared off the line with Dillon’s immediate cross-shot then hitting the post.

Oatley then saw her direct free-kick go wide with The Vixens keeper then producing a good save from Kilner.

Just before the half-time interval Pool got the breakthrough their play warranted as Barlow played an excellent ball through to Oatley who produced a cool finish past the proficient keeper.

Into the second period and it was Blackpool who went in search of a further goal.

Jones saw her cross go across the face of the Northwich goal with Gill then having an attempt over.

With 10 minutes remaining Pool were fortunate not to concede an equaliser when a poor clearance found a Vixens player.

Luckily Kilner managed to get back and quash the opportunity, enabling Findlay to gather the ball.

The second goal for Pool came shortly after, with Oatley first to react to the keeper’s spillage of Kilner’s effort to finish well for her second.

With Banner heading clear a Vixens free-kick and a stoppage time effort from McGill being cleared for a corner the score was to remain at 2-0 with victory and three points for The Seasiders.

Squad: Findlay, McGill, Jones (Capt), Banner, Oldfield, Turnbull, Gill, Kilner, Dillon, Oatley, Davies, Barlow, Lambshead, Latham.

The Ladies are next in action on Wednesday 10th April as they play Chester City away in the quarter-final of the cup.
