Great Comeback Against Wigan

Remaining in second place on goal difference but now level on points with league leaders Morecambe, Blackpool FC Ladies took all three points in a hard fought victory against Wigan Athletic over the weekend.

In blustery conditions the Ladies found themselves two goals down in the opening 25 minutes, before reducing the deficit to 2-1 at the interval and then scoring two second-half goals to claim the win.

The visitors took the lead within the first five minutes with Pool losing possession in midfield and a shot from distance was fired into the top corner. April Oldfield, in search of an equaliser, saw her effort go wide with Athletic having a similar effort off target and an attempt cleared off the line.

A Sian Dillon effort was parried by the visiting keeper into the path of Lauren Oatley but her attempt went wide of the mark and a subsequent low effort on target from her saw the visiting defender clear. Dillon again tested the keeper and the following corner was cleared by Wigan, after somewhat of a goalmouth scramble.

The visitors then extended their advantage with Becky Sullivan in the home goal unable to keep the shot from crossing the line. Pool almost immediately got a deserved goal, with Dillon doing well to retain the ball and playing back to Barlow for a bottom corner finish.

In search of an equaliser, an Oldfield through ball was initially spilled by the keeper but gathered at the second attempt. With Oatley’s low header going marginally wide her next attempt found the back of the net from a Dillon through ball but the referee judged it offside.

In the second period Pool showed their intent to grab an equaliser with an Olivia Turnbull through ball for Oatley being smothered by the keeper and Oldfield having an attempt on target. Their efforts were to be rewarded on 48 minutes though as Oatley's effort was parried by the keeper into the path of Dillon to finish.

Just before the hour mark the Ladies pressure reaped further rewards when Oatley and Dillon linked up well to set-up Jenni McGill, who finished at the far post to give Blackpool a 3-2 lead.

Turnbull and Barlow both looked to extend the lead but their efforts went wide and with Oldfield heading over, Pool could not find the elusive goal to put the game beyond the visitors reach.

Wigan pressed for an equaliser but Jones and fellow centre-half Charlotte Banner were both on hand to clear the danger away. McGill and substitute Lauren Ward both had efforts for Pool before the full-time whistle but the score remained 3-2.
