Caretaker Boss Says Any Moves Have To Be Right For Blackpool

Steve Thompson is expecting a busy day ahead in the lead up to the transfer deadline at 11pm tonight, but admits he will only bring in players who can make an immediate impact on the first team.

The caretaker boss has already brought in two loan-signings in January in the form of Matt Derbyshire and Reece Wabara and if there are no further transfers, in or out, Tommo believes the squad is strong enough to make a challenge in the last few months of the campaign.

"Plenty of phone calls have been going in," said Thompson.

"Obviously there is speculation regarding our players as well. I'll be back at the ground later today to see what feedback we've got off players that we think might be able to come in and affect our squad.

"It's going to be busy. Hopefully we can get the right sort of people into Blackpool, but having said that we still have a decent squad here and we are not going to bring in players for the sake of it. We want to make sure that they bring something to the team.

"We've highlighted certain positions that we are a little bit short of, especially defenders here. I think we are quite alright in the midfield department, we've got a nice blend of flair and steel so we've got to make sure if anyone does come in that they don't just come in and make the numbers up. I want to make sure that they are going to bring something to the table.

The Seasiders' prized assets have been linked with moves away from the club and Tommo believes that is only natural given the high standard of players that Blackpool possess.

"There's a lot of players out there who have gone for big money and we class our players as good as them, so as much as we want them to go and progress and play at the highest standard we are not going to give them away cheap. It's got to be right for the football club."
