A spirited come back from Blackpool Youth came to nothing, with their opponents Macclesfield scoring an injury-time goal to clinch a 3-2 victory over The Seasiders.
On a blustery morning at Squires Gate the hosts came back from 2-0 down to draw level through Dom Telford and Ramone Blackett.
But it proved to be in vein with Macclesfield scoring a 94th minute winner after Pool failed to clear a corner at the first time of asking.
Blackpool started the game on the back foot, with Macclesfield mustering four shots on goal in the opening ten minutes.
The visitors’ pressure paid dividends when Joel Swift opened the scoring on 13 minutes.
Dean Gardikiotis’ punt up field was headed straight back towards the Pool goal and Swift clinically lobbed it over the stranded keeper.
The Tangerines weathered the storm and dominated possession for large periods of the first-half, without creating any clear cut opportunities.
The closest they came was when Kieran Shaw beat his man in the corner, found George Lomax in the box only for the striker’s goal-bound shot to be blocked when it looked destined for the bottom corner.
The second-half was a tepid affair with chances at a premium, until it sparked into life with 20 minutes remaining.
Macclesfield looked to have sealed all three points, when Blackpool didn’t defend a corner properly and the visitors secured a 2-0 lead.
But John Hills’ side sprung into life after that and were handed a life-line from referee Mr. K. Martin, when they were awarded a penalty after 78 minutes.
Martin pointed to the spot after Telford was tripped and the youngster picked himself up to dispatch the penalty and become another under 16 to impress for the Youths this year.
Blackpool were rejuvenated by Telford’s goal and completed an unlikely comeback six minutes later.
Substitute Ade Cole raced down the left wing, before cutting on to his right foot, finding the onrushing Ramone Blackett, who headed home to make it 2-2.
Pool were getting a lot of joy down the left side, and almost went in front when Telford flashed a cross-come-shot across the face of goal with the ball just evading Blackett.
Failure to make the most of that chance proved very costly, when Macclesfield scored with the last kick of the game.
A shot from the edge of the area was parried by Gardikiotis, falling into the path of a Macclesfield striker who smashed in the winner to deal Pool a cruel knockout blow.
