Blackpool manager Ian Holloway believes that the players have now cemented themselves a place in folklore following promotion to the Premiership.
The Seasiders' boss made it clear on numerous occasions this season that he wanted the town to have a new team of heroes, following in the footsteps of Matthews, Mortensen and Armfield. And that is now a reality as Pool prepare to face the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea in the top flight.
"You should be judged at what you've done by the end of your career and these boys will be immortal now, people will be talking about them in 40 years," he said. "That is all I wanted.
"These players at Blackpool have grown together, they are a fantastic group. And with this win they have changed not only their own lives but also those of the people in the area.
"It's way beyond my wildest dreams that this group of players have achieved something that I think history might not see again.
"History tells you it was beyond us, but not now. You can't write a script like that, that's why it's such a wonderful game," he added.
