Blackpool slipped to a second defeat in a week as they were defeated 4-3 by MK Dons in a Carling Cup second round epic.
The Tangerines made 10 changes from the weekend defeat at Arsenal, with midfielder Ludovic Sylvestre the sole survivor.
New signings Dekel Keinan and Chris Basham were handed full first-team debuts, while youngster Tom Barkhuizen was given a surprise start.
But the Seasiders found themselves 1-0 down after just 53 seconds; a long ball forward saw Dons' striker Sam Baldock through on goal and the striker made no mistake, firing expertly past Halstead.
The visitors were sporadic in their attacking forays with Ishmel Demontagnac's weak free-kick their first effort of note on 18 minutes, drawing a comfortable save from David Martin.
With the Tangerines continuing to look out of sorts, it was again the Dons who nearly extended their lead.
Dean Lewington made a dart down the left flank before sliding an inch perfect cross into the feet of Baldock eight yards out, only for the goal-scorer to guide his effort wide of the post.
In a rare Blackpool attack, Ishmel spun Lewington on the right flank before cutting inside and firing a fierce left- foot drive that drew a superb diving save from Martin, with the ball destined for the bottom right-hand corner.
With the half drawing to a close Blackpool began to rouse from their slumber with Barkhuizen feeding Stephen Husband who played a neat one-two with Ormerod, but the midfielder could only find the side netting from an acute angle.
The Tangerines were rejuvenated after the break, Ishmel smashing a left-footed effort against the right-hand post leaving Ormerod to tap in the rebound, only for the linesman's flag to cut short the celebrations.
But Ormerod wasn't to be denied for a second time and just moments later Neil Eardley hung a delightful cross towards the back post, leaving the veteran to slide home the simplest of chances.
The Tangerines euphoria was to be short -lived when Balanta released Jermaine Easter inside the 18 -yard box and the striker finished clinically to make it 1-1.
And when Easter again found himself through on goal just a minute later, the striker made no mistake, sliding the ball beyond the helpless Halstead to give the home side a two-goal advantage.
The Seasiders refused to crumble, though and Sylvestre completed a manic five minute spell to make it 3-2 on 58 minutes, his free-kick deceiving Martin and flying into the far right-hand corner to send the travelling support into raptures.
With the wind in their sails the visitors pushed for an equaliser, Eardley firing straight at Martin after a superb threaded ball by Husband on 70 minutes.
And they were rewarded for their endeavour when Ormerod was pushed in the box on 81 minutes, leaving the referee no option but to award a penalty which substitute Charlie Adam converted with ease.
Both sides pressed for a winner and Ormerod had an effort cleared off the line in stoppage time before Leven struck a post for the Dons as the game went to extra-time.
In a quiet opening period Adam struck a firm left-footed drive that had Martin scampering while Coid was forced into a magnificent goal line intervention with MK Dons finishing the half in the ascendency.
With the game 110 minutes old, Dons substitute Lewis Guy was first to Easter's knockdown and had no hesitation in drilling home a fine finish to make it 4-3.
Blackpool searched valiantly for an equaliser but the home side clung on to seal a famous victory.
