Bloomfield Plays Host To Northern Rail Cup Final
Bloomfield Road swaps sports today as the Northern Rail Cup Final between Salford City Reds and Doncaster Dragons takes centre stage.
The rugby league competition is being held at the home of the Seasiders for the fourth successive time as both teams look to get their hands on the first piece of silverware this season.
The RFL are offering Blackpool season ticket holders the chance to attend the game for FREE after kindly giving a number of tickets to the club.
Any Blackpool season ticket holders looking to take advantage of this fantastic offer can receive their FREE match ticket for Block Q from the club ticket office, subject to availability.
Salford, currently top of the Co-operative National League One table, are the clear favourites going into the game given that they were only relegated from the Engage Super League last season.
In comparison, Doncaster nearly went bust in the off-season after being relegated to National League Two. They go into the game as underdogs but have already pulled off a few shocks en-route to the final.
The match pits the wits of two former St. Helens coaches up against each other as Shaun McRae and Ellery Hanley come face-to-face.
For Hanley, taking Doncaster to the final of the Northern Rail Cup must now rank as one of his most famous achievements, even more so if his side were to be victorious.
Doncaster are currently part-time and reached the final after defeating the Batley Bulldogs 21-12 last month. Salford beat the Celtic Crusaders 36-20.
Speaking on the RFL website ahead of the game this weekend, Salford coach Shaun McRae said: "Doncaster will throw a lot at us. They'll have an attitude of 'well, no one really expects us to win so lets go and throw the ball around'. If we're good enough to react to those things then we can nullify what they do.
"We're very mindful of what they did to Batley in the semi-final and they've earned the right to be in this final. But, having said all that, I think we're in good shape. Most of our guys are playing well."
Counterpart Ellery Hanley added: "We know we're the underdogs but that suits us well. We'll go out there and enjoy ourselves and we'll be very competitive. We know what we have to do. We know that Salford are an extremely good side, there's no question about that.
"But the players here are part time, they only come in for a few hours a week, and that's why they've done extremely well."
The game at Bloomfield Road kicks-off at 2:45pm and is also live on Sky Sports 3.
