Jimmy Set For Downing Street

Posted on: Wed 10 Jun 2009

Jimmy Armfield is to pay a special visit to 10 Downing Street today to collect a World Cup Winners' Medal - 43 years after England lifted the trophy.

The Blackpool legend will receive his medal from Prime Minister Gordon Brown and FIFA President Sepp Blatter, before heading off to Wembley to make an appearance on the pitch prior to England's World Cup qualifier with Andorra.

Of his visit, Armfield said: "It will be nice to get the medal after all these years and I'm also looking forward to getting inside 10 Downing Street.

"I've been on the actual street before because when I was young you had free entry to Downing Street - it wasn't blocked off like it is now.

"But I've never been inside number 10 so it will be a new experience for me."

Prior to the 1974 World Cup only those players who started in the final received a medal, but FIFA confirmed last month that they will reward the players who were part of the squad.
