BLACKPOOL 1 HIBERNIAN 2

Posted on: Mon 09 Aug 2010

Goals from Derek Riordan and Liam Miller ensured that Hibernian came from a goal down to beat Blackpool 2-1 at Bloomfield Road.

In what was an entertaining game, first-half especially, it was the Seasiders who took the lead with a fine team goal that was finished off by Jason Euell. It maybe should have been more as Pool displayed some fine attacking interchange but Riordan levelled prior to half-time.

Miller's winner that came from a second-half free-kick as the home side started to make a raft of changes with next Saturday's Barclays Premier League opener at Wigan in mind.

It was Hibs' striker Derek Riordan who had the first chance of the game, he sent a dipping effort just wide of the post. Charlie Adam then drilled a free-kick against the wall for Blackpool after Gary Taylor-Fletcher was fouled just outside the area.

The Seasiders opened the scoring with a goal that had Premier League written all over it, Jason Euell worked a fine one-two with Ishmel Demontagnac following great work from Gary Taylor-Fletcher and then fired the ball into the bottom corner (8).

Both sides were seeing plenty of possession in what was proving to be a very open game and the ideal fixture prior to next weekend's season opener at Wigan.

Another great attacking move saw Brett Ormerod have a fine chipped effort headed off the line as Blackpool started to move the ball around the opposition and find plenty of space.

The chances were now coming thick and fast as Charlie Adam rattled the bar with a free-kick after Ishmel was fouled and Jason Euell sent a header just wide.

Derek Riordan came close to fashioning an equaliser but his near post flick was pounced upon by Matt Gilks. The striker wasn't to be denied moments later though as he headed the SPL side back in to the game (32).

The Scottish international was in fine form for Hibs and forced a great save out of Matt Gilks as he tried to put the away side in front from a set-piece. Gilks was then at his best to deny David Wotherspoon from a tight angle.

At the other end Alex Baptiste struck the bar with an effort from the edge of the area and Brett Ormerod drilled a strike straight at Graeme Smith.

HALF-TIME SCORE: BLACKPOOL 1 HIBERNIAN 1

The game restarted in the same manner as the first ended and once again it was the Seasiders who were in the ascendancy. A few early chances just lacked that final touch in front of goal.

Jason Euell did find the target when finding space but his effort was gathered easily by sub goalkeeper Mark Brown. Gary Taylor-Fletcher should have made it two though when but he fired over from six-yards out following great work from Stephen Crainey down the left.

The Seasiders made their first substitutions after 65 minutes, Rob Edwards, Stephen Husband, Danny Coid and trialist Alex Tayo replaced Stephen Crainey, David Vaughan, Charlie Adam and Brett Ormerod.

Derek Riordan was continuing to be Hibs' best threat in front of goal and added another shot on target when firing into the arms of Matt Gilks.

It was the visitors who did take the lead though as Liam Miller curled a free-kick into the top corner after Lee Currie had been fouled (78).

A number of the younger players were given a chance to impress in the closing stages of the game, Adam Dodd, Tom Barkhuizen and Ash Eastham replaced Ian Evatt, Neal Eardley and Gary Taylor-Fletcher.

Jason Euell flashed a chance over as the Seasiders chased an equaliser but the goal wasn't to be forthcoming as the final pre-season outing ended in defeat.
