Reserves Go Down 2-0 At Preston
The Seasiders penultimate reserve game of the season ended in disappointment with Steve Thompson's men going down 2-0 at local rivals Preston North End.The Seasiders included six players with first team experience whilst the hosts included 10 with senior experience including former England international Michael Ricketts and transfer window signing Neil Mellor.
The hosts in front of a vociferous crowd had the better of the opening exchanges with Mawene, Mellor and Agyemang going close in the opening ten minutes. The Seasiders first real chance of the night came in the 20th minute of the game when fit again David Fox picked up the ball 35-yards out and tried his luck with a low pile-driver that skimmed just wide of Lonergan's right-hand post.Lonergan was called into action seven minutes later when Adrian Forbes played a quick free-kick on the edge of the box to Danny Coid and from only eight yards out Lonergan spread himself in front of the ball to deny Coid from point-blank range.Mellor and Agyemang both went close before Simon Whaley opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, the former Bury winger who is being linked with a big money move in the summer reacted the quickest to fire home after Songo's free kick had caused problems. After the break Kyle Clancy produced a great save on 58 minutes to parry Whaley's pile driver, two minutes later Preston were indebted to Dylan Adams who was forced to clear off the line following a bullet header from Latvian international Kaspars Gorkss, who had met a corner from the right. With both teams making changes it was Preston who added to the scoreline, when Michael Ricketts curled a brilliant free kick over the defensive wall and beyond Clancy.
On the performance Steve Thompson said, "I can't fault anyone for their effort or commitment tonight, when we saw their team we knew it was going to be a tough game, the senior players and younger lads will have benefited from playing against good players on a great surface, I felt we deserved at least a goal but it just wouldn't come, hopefully we will have the same level of performance on Monday at Carlisle."
