Reserves Record First Victory Of The Season
The Seasiders reserve team recorded their first victory of 2004 with a 2-1 victory over Shrewsbury.
Pool began proceedings on a chilly March afternoon having welcomed back Tommy Jaszczun and Steve Davis from injury, also included in the starting eleven were Jamie Burns, Sean Hessey, Richard Walker and Simon Wiles who had travelled to Rushden some 24 hours earlier.
After an entertaining opening Pool took the lead through Simon Wiles, the young winger firing a powerful volley beyond the 'keeper after the Shrews had failed to clear Jamie Burns teasing right wing corner.
The lead was doubled on 24 minutes when the impressive Andrew Mangan dispossessed the visitors big centre back before calmly slotting beyond the 'keeper. Mangan's strike all but ended the contest, but Pool did have several chances to add to their lead with Denny Herzig and Simon Wiles both squandering chances before the interval.
After just sixty seconds of the second period Pool should have gone three up, Andrew Mangan and Richard Walker combining well before the latter screwed a shot well wide.
Just before the hour mark, Shrewsbury pulled one back through Ian Fitzpatrick. Pool were forced into a change when Sean Hessey left the action to receive stitches having suffered a clash of heads. The change saw young Sean Lawlor come into the action at left back.
Pool dominated the second half with Simon Wiles and Jamie Burns impressive down the flanks, but despite the pressure, Pool could not add to their tally.
Pool: Edge, Hessey, Jaszczun, Doughty, Davis, Wiles, Herzig, Gilston, Burns, Mangan, Walker.
