The Seasiders reserve team began their new season in similar fashion to the senior counterparts with Oldham Athletic recording a 1-0 win at Fleetwood Town on Wednesday afternoon.

The Seasiders included no fewer than four trialists in the starting line up, former Manchester City defender Paul Collins joined Jonathan Goulding and Phil Doran in back three, former Newcastle trainee Dave Cowan and Jamie Burns provided the wing backs, fit again Marcus Bean was joined by Ciaran Donnelly and 6' 7" trialist Morike Sako in midfield with Sean Paterson and former Coventry man Craig Reid leading the Pool attack.

The Seasiders got things underway but it was the visitors who provided the first talking point of the match. After just six minutes Marcus Bean was sent tumbling in midfield by Northern Ireland international Mark Hughes, fortunately for Pool, the former QPR man was able to carry on whilst Hughes was fortunate to receive only a lecture from the referee. Two minutes later Oldham almost took the lead, the lively Hughes was pulled back on the edge of the area by Collins, French midfielder Moussa Dabo stepped up to take the resulting free kick and saw his curling effort fly just over the bar.

The Seasiders first chance of the match came just past the quarter hour when Craig Reid's curling free kick forced the Latics keeper Terry Smith to tip over for a corner. The resulting Ciaran Donnelly corner saw Morike Sako glance a header just wide.

Paul Collins and Craig Reid were the pick of the trialists first half and on 24 minutes Reid having been two players was denied by a great block from Terry Smith, but on the stroke of half time Oldham opened the scoring, when Spanish substitute Diego Cervero nodded home a great corner from the right.

Cervero almost doubled the visitors lead five minutes after the break when his header was well saved by Clancy. Two minutes later Pool made their first change of the afternoon when Marcus Bean was replaced by Matt Kay, the change was obviously a precaution ahead of Saturday's game with Bristol City.

Cervero almost doubled Oldham's lead when a rasping long range strike flew just wide, whilst Craig Reid saw an effort fly over following a flick on from Sako.

With both sides making changes it was the Tangerines who finished the game stronger, an exquisite through ball from Matty Kay put Craig Reid one on one with the keeper, but the striker could only direct his finish wide. The former Coventry man also saw a shot on the turn fumbled by the Oldham keeper shortly before the final whistle, but the Oldham defence somehow scrambled clear to take the points back down the M62.
