Vassell and Robertson Goals Seal Victory

24 February 2018

Goals from Kyle Vassell and Clark Robertson stretched Blackpool’s unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One to five matches with a 2-0 victory at Portsmouth.

A clinical display in front of goal, backed by some solid rear-guard action proved the foundation for the result, which was Pool’s second consecutive win on the road.

Manager Gary Bowyer made two changes to his side for the game, with Jay Spearing and Kyle Vassell coming in for Sean Longstaff and Armand Gnanduillet.

It was Vassell, back from a two-match absence, who had Blackpool’s first two opportunities. Nathan Delfouneso did well on both occasions to work himself some space, however the returning forward lashed wide.

At the other end, Jamal Lowe did well down the right and whipped a ball across the six-yard box that Oliver Hawkins fired over from.

Hawkins, who twice required treatment after clattering with Joe Lumley in the opening stages, was off target again after some good work inside the Blackpool area.

It was the Portsmouth frontman who continued to look the most threatening and he probably should have opened the scoring for the home side on the half-hour mark. A ball into the box dropped kindly for him, however he blasted it narrowly wide.

That miss proved costly soon after as Kyle Vassell put Blackpool in front. The striker dispossessed Christian Burgess and raced away before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.

Half-Time: Portsmouth 0 Blackpool 1

The Portsmouth fans raised the volume again at the start of the second-half to try and inspire their side back into the contest.

Kenny Jackett’s team were unable to fathom any initial opportunities though, which led to a substitution. Connor Ronan was the man to come on, replacing Matty Kennedy.

Jamal Lowe then curled wide with an attempt from 10-yards out, prior to another change seeing Kal Naismith take the place of Hawkins.

However, Blackpool quickly doubled their advantage when Clark Robertson was left unmarked in the Portsmouth box. The defender latched on to a cross from Jay Spearing to head in his second goal of the season.

The goal prompted The Seasiders to make a change for the final 23 or so minutes of the contest, with Danny Philliskirk coming on for Viv Solomon-Otabor.

Curtis Tilt, not content with seeing his centre-back partner on the score-sheet, tried his luck with a header inside the six-yard box but could only direct it straight at the ‘keeper.

Kyle Vassell left the field to a great reception from the Pool fans with seven minutes of normal time remaining. Armand Gnanduillet was the man to replace him.

No further opportunities were to follow though, as The Seasiders moved onto 42 points for the season.

Full-Time: Portsmouth 0 Blackpool 2
