Dramatic Draw In Checkatrade Trophy But Bonus Point Lost In Shoot-Out

4 September 2018

Two late goals saw Blackpool rally to draw 3-3 with Macclesfield Town in the Checkatrade Trophy but lose out on a bonus point in a shoot-out.

Paudie O’Connor’s 94th minute header capped off the comeback for The Seasiders, who had fallen behind to two second-half goals from Michael Rose.

Callum Guy initially levelled matters for Blackpool in the first-half to cancel out a strike from Nathan Blissett, while John O’Sullivan was also on target for Pool.

Interim manager Terry McPhillips made nine changes for the group stage fixture, with Callum Guy joined by Ryan McLaughlin in making his competitive debut for the club.

It was McLaughlin who provided the first threat for The Seasiders down the right-hand side. The former Oldham man drove at the Macclesfield left-back and took a tumble in the penalty area. The referee waved away his appeals, though.

Despite dominating the early possession, Blackpool found themselves behind in the 14th minute. Malachi Napa made the most of some hesitancy in defence to hold the ball up and then cut it back for Nathan Blissett to find the bottom corner.

The Seasiders’ first attempt came from Armand Gnanduillet four minutes later, however his snap-shot sailed high and wide. The French striker then had a glorious opportunity to level matters with a free header yet nodded the ball agonisingly wide of the post.

Napa and Blissett linked up well once again for the hosts as the half-hour mark approached, though Christoffer Mafoumbi saved the resulting effort from the latter.

Blackpool grabbed the equaliser in spectacular fashion just after, and it came from Callum Guy. The debutant received the ball 25-yards out and left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

Level parity didn’t last long though, as Michael Rose hit a stunning strike on a par with Blackpool’s to restore Macclesfield’s advantage.

Ben Heneghan had two good chances to reply for Blackpool prior to half-time, but he headed off target on both occasions. John O’Sullivan then did likewise in stoppage time.

Half-Time: Macclesfield Town 2 Blackpool 1

Michael Nottingham replaced Ryan McLaughlin at the interval, who marked his return from injury with 45 minutes on debut.

Harry Pritchard was the first player to register an attempt after the restart, sending a dipping effort just over the bar.

At the other end, a great cover tackle from captain for the night Chris Taylor denied Napa from putting the home side further in front.

Armand Gnanduillet’s flick-on saw Harry Pritchard have another opportunity for Pool, though this time he fired narrowly wide of the far post on the turn.

Liam Feeney, after a strong showing down the right, was brought off in the 67th minute and replaced by youngster Fin Sinclair-Smith.

The 18-year-old made an immediate impact on the game, seeing an over-head kick turned behind by Rhys Taylor.

As The Seasiders continued to push, they ended up conceding a penalty at the other end. Ben Heneghan was the man who committed the foul, which allowed Michael Rose to score his second of the game for Macclesfield.

Blackpool grabbed a lifeline when John O’Sullivan bundled in from a corner with 90 minutes on the clock, but the drama didn’t end there. Another corner brought a 94th minute equaliser courtesy of a header from Paudie O’Connor.

Full-Time: Macclesfield Town 3 Blackpool 3

A penalty shoot-out ensued for a bonus point in Northern Group C but Marc Bola’s miss allowed Rose to secure it with a 5-3 scoreline for the hosts.
