Seasiders Suffer Loss To Stubborn Shrewsbury

21 December 2019

Blackpool suffered a narrow loss at home to Shrewsbury Town in what was the first defeat in the league since mid-October.

A second half penalty from Shrewsbury’s Fejiri Okenabirhie was the difference, as Blackpool struggled to break down a stubborn Salop defence all afternoon.

With 16 minutes on the clock, Liam Feeney fed in a fantastic ball from the right hand side, with Armand Gnanduillet ready to pounce but the front man just couldn’t get his head to it.

Five minutes later, Gnanduillet had another great opportunity with a header, but his effort was tipped over the bar wonderfully by Max O’Leary in the Shrewsbury goal.

In truth, genuine goal scoring opportunities were hard to come by in the opening 45 minutes and the sides went in at half-time, goalless.

Half-Time: Blackpool 0 Shrewsbury Town 0

Blackpool almost found the opener in the first two minutes of the second half. With the ball bouncing around the penalty area, Gnanduillet was able to poke at it from six yards away, but the ball came off of the post and bounced away.

Just two minutes later, Liam Feeney whipped in a lovely free-kick which met Nathan Delfouneso’s head, only for the forward’s effort to be well held by O’Leary.

With ten minutes of the second half gone, Shrewsbury were awarded a penalty. A ball was floated in to the left hand side of the penalty area and Gnanduillet was adjudged to have handled it. Fejiri Okenabirhie stepped up and fired the ball down the middle of the goal, despite Alnwick managing to get a diving foot on the ball.

Blackpool responded well to going behind and Liam Feeney had a curling effort go just wide of the goal from 25 yards out minutes later.

Despite some good late pressure, the Seasiders couldn’t find the back of the net and were left to suffer just their fourth league defeat of the season in the last fixture before Christmas.
