Seasiders Held In Stalemate

24 August 2019

Blackpool maintained their unbeaten start to the Sky Bet League One season after being held to a goal-less at Rochdale.

A strong display from opposition goalkeeper Robert Sanchez kept the team at bay, with the stopper denying Armand Gnanduillet, Sullay Kaikai and Jordan Thompson, while the Seasiders also hit the post in the 94th minute.

It was the hosts who dominated the early possession though, playing out from the back and remaining patient on the ball. There was nothing too troubling for the Seasiders though, apart from a corner delivery that Jak Alnwick had to parry away from his line.

At the other end, Armand Gnanduillet came close to opening the scoring for Blackpool with a point-blank header, only to be denied by a superb save from Robert Sanchez.

The Rochdale stopped continued to show good reactions, rushing off his line time and again to claim numerous balls into the box from Liam Feeney.

Jordan Thompson did well on the edge of the box to win the ball back and tee himself up from 20-yards, however he dragged his effort wide.

Half-Time: Rochdale 0 Blackpool 0

Former Pool skipper Jimmy Ryan didn’t re-surface after the interval for Rochdale and was replaced by Rekeil Pyke, who almost had the chance to give the home side the lead. The ball was slipped through to him inside the box but, under pressure from Curtis Tilt, he failed to connect cleanly with the ball.

For Blackpool, Sullay Kaikai made a strong run down the right, twisting his man inside and out before seeing a shot saved by Sanchez.

Callum Camps then went close for Rochdale, shifting onto his left foot and letting fly with a rasping drive from 22-yards. Fortunately, the ball went just over the bar.

Just after the hour mark, Simon Grayson opted to change things. Joe Nuttall was introduced up top alongside Armand Gnanduillet, with Sullay Kaikai the man to go off.

It was Rochdale who created the next chance though, working a free-kick well before seeing Ian Henderson fire wide.

With 13 minutes of the game remaining Jordan Thompson had a great opportunity to give Blackpool the lead, having latching onto a knock-down from Nuttall. Unfortunately, he blasted his effort straight at the ‘keeper.

Blackpool continued to push for a late winner and struck the post deep into added time, however the final whistle then blew to leave the side sharing the spoils.
