Joe Nuttall Winner Steals Victory

29 February 2020

Joe Nuttall scored a 92nd minute winner to give the Seasiders all three points against Ipswich Town.

Nuttall headed into the top corner from a Liam Feeney cross in the final 60 seconds after Freddie Sears' goal cancelled Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's wonderful strike in the first half.

With ten minutes gone, Freddie Sears did well down the right hand side for Ipswich. The winger drilled in a low ball after beating Calum Macdonald, but his cross flashed just past Will Keane.

Ten minutes later, Nathan Delfouneso won possession back in the attacking third with some good pressing play. He timed a pass brilliantly to Gary Madine, but the striker delayed taking the effort and was left to turn and pass wide to the overlapping Calum Macdonald, who’s first time cross flew past everyone and went out for a goal kick.

With 26 minutes on the clock, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall got his second goal in as many games to give the Seasiders the lead. The midfielder won possession back in the attacking third and cut inside on his left foot to curl an effort wonderfully past Tomas Holy in the Ipswich goal, to clip off the far post and go into the net.

Ipswich had a good chance to equalise on 35 minutes. Flynn Downes was clean through on goal, but there was Chris Maxwell to deny him with a strong hand low to his left. The ball rebounded to Freddie Sears, but James Husband made a fantastic last ditch challenge to clear the ball away.

Ipswich had a fair few chances towards the end of the first half, but Chris Maxwell kept them at bay and Blackpool went into the interval leading by a single goal.

Half Time: Blackpool 1 Ipswich Town 0

It wasn’t long in the second half before Ipswich levelled through Freddie Sears. Nathan Delfouneso lost possession in the middle of the park, and the visitors did well down the right to find a cross to the oncoming Freddie Sears, who smashed the ball into the net to equalise.

David Dunn made a change with 25 minutes to go, bringing on Joe Nuttall who replaced Connor Ronan.

With 15 minutes of the game remaining, Blackpool had a good chance to retake the lead through a corner kick. The ball was whipped in by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and met the head of Gary Madine, but the striker’s header clipped the top of the bar, bounced back into the danger zone with Tomas Holy in the Ipswich goal making claim for the ball.

Yet, it was Joe Nuttall who won the match late in the day with a bullet header into the top corner to secure all three points and make it back-to-back wins for the Seasiders for the first time since mid-November.
