Blackpool scored five goals without reply to secure an emphatic victory over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.
Goals from Marvin Ekpiteta, Jerry Yates, Matty Virtue and a brace from Ellis Simms secured the three points in a fantastic victory for Neil Critchley's men.
Jerry Yates had an early effort blocked in the opening ten minutes, after Matty Virtue’s header back across goal from a Bez Lubala cross found the Blackpool striker, but his effort was ultimately charged down on it’s way to goal.
With half an hour gone, Kyle Joseph had a good opportunity for the hosts. A good ball in from the left hand side from Tom Pearce was met by the young striker who headed at goal, but went over Maxwell and out for a goal kick.
Blackpool turned on the style in the final moments of the first half, scoring two quickfire goals to take a strong lead into the break.
The first came from Marvin Ekpiteta on 40 minutes, with the ex-Leyton Orient man finding the back of the net after a corner kick caused havoc in the hosts penalty area. Attempts at goal from Matty Virtue and Jerry Yates were blocked, before Ekpiteta was able to bundle the ball home to score his first goal for the Seasiders.
Just two minutes later, Blackpool doubled their lead through Jerry Yates. James Husband’s first-time cross in from deep was knocked down by a Wigan defender, with the ball falling to Yates who was able to dispatch the ball past the goalkeeper, and give Blackpool a two goal lead at the interval.
Half-time: Wigan Athletic 0 Blackpool 2
Blackpool increased their lead further just five minutes after the restart through a wonderfully worked goal, culminating in a Matty Virtue finish.
Lubala picked up the ball just outside the penalty area and found James Husband on the overlapping run. The full-back’s first time ball into the box found Virtue, who smashed the ball home from ten yards away to make it 3-0 to the Seasiders.
At the other end, Chris Maxwell made a brilliant save to deny Callum Lang’s strike from just inside the penalty area heading over the goal.
Ellis Simms, who had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes after coming on as a substitute for Jerry Yates, had a golden opportunity to score his first Blackpool goal on 70 minutes. The Everton-loanee was fed through on goal from Matty Virtue, with Simms timing his run perfectly to go through on goal. His effort from an acute angle was saved well by the Wigan goalkeeper’s legs, however.
It didn’t take long for Simms to find the back of the net, though, with the forward scoring a brace in the final moments to make it 5-0 to the Seasiders.
Simms’s first came from a wonderful flick-on from Gary Madine to set him up, with Simms able to bundle the ball over the line, before his second and Blackpool's fifth came moments later.
A simple one, with a corner kick whipped in, with Simms there to knock the ball over the line and complete the rout to secure a remarkable victory on the road for the Seasiders.
