Report: Blackpool 1 AFC Wimbledon 1

6 March 2021

A late deflected strike from Ollie Palmer for AFC Wimbledon saw Blackpool share the spoils at Bloomfield Road on Saturday afternoon.

A defelcted effort from Ellis Simms on the hour mark gave Blackpool the lead before Ollie Palmer's defection in the dying moments condemned Blackpool to back-to-back 1-1 draws at home.

The visitors had a fantastic opportunity to take the lead early on, but Chris Maxwell was there to deny them. Joe Pigott, Wimbledon’s top scorer so far this season, connected well with a cross from the left, firing a shot at goal from a tight angle. Chris Maxwell, though, stuck a leg out and blocked the ball on the line.

Wimbledon then had the ball in the back of the net 60 seconds later, with another cross finding the Wimbledon front-man, but the linesman ruled it out straight away, flagging for an apparent handball.

At the other end, Demetri Mitchell had a rare sight at goal, with a clever little lob over Sam Walker in goal. Mitchell, with a first time effort, dinked the ball at goal which went over Sam Walker but was acrobatically cleared off the line from Will Nightingale.

With ten minutes of the first half remaining, Demetri Mitchell did well to evade his man on the left flank and slide a perfect ball into the feet of Ellis Simms. Simms took aim and fired from acute angle, but the effort was well-tipped over by Sam Walker.

The Seasiders were applying all the pressure in the second half, with CJ Hamilton proving a real thorn in the Wimbledon’s side. That pressure paid off in the early stages of the second half.

It was Hamilton who did well to get to the byline on the hour mark, and feed a cross into Jerry Yates. Yates’s first effort was blocked, before his second took a slight deflection off of Ellis Simms, on the way towards goal, wrong footing Sam Walker before crossing the goal line.

Despite going behind, it was Wimbledon who grew in the ascendency as the game progressed, in their search for a pivotal equaliser. In the final ten minutes, Chris Maxwell was forced into a good diving save to deny Ollie Palmer’s headed effort, before Nesta Guiness-Walker’s effort on the turn was down the throat of the Blackpool goalkeeper.

The visitors waited until the dying moments, when a shot on the edge of the area for Wimbledon found Palmer, who's deflection lifted over Chris Maxwell and looped into the net to finish the score as 1-1.
