Report: Blackpool 1-4 Ipswich Town

10 October 2020

Blackpool suffered defeat on Saturday afternoon as a stunning first half performance from Ipswich Town was enough to claim all three points at Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool suffered defeat at Bloomfield Road as Ipswich Town scored four to seal all three points. Despite Gary Madine pulling one back with his first goal of the season after Luke Chambers, Gwion Edwards and Teddy Bishop gave the visitors a 3-0 half-time lead, Paul Lambert’s side put the game beyond doubt in the second half in a convincing victory for the visitors.

Neil Critchley’s men were looking to grab their second win of the 20/21 season against Ipswich Town, who have started the season in a rich vein of form after winning three out of their first four League One matches.

Blackpool started the game in an initial 4-1-4-1 formation, with Jerry Yates and CJ Hamilton supporting Gary Madine up front. Keshi Anderson, Grant Ward and Ethan Robson continued as a midfield three, whilst Luke Garbutt and Jordan Gabriel made their League One debuts for the Seasiders.

Paul Lambert’s side, who are yet to be beaten away from home this season, took an early lead at Bloomfield Road. Gwion Edwards skipped past Gabriel and crossed it in from the left hand side, only for his cross to be met by Luke Chambers at the back post, with the latter rifling a spectacular half volley past Chris Maxwell to put the visitors in control.

The Seasiders responded well and had a half chance to equalise on the 20th minute mark. Ethan Robson’s pass found Anderson in space on the right hand side, but the midfielder’s cross was just too high for Yates, who failed to direct his header on target in the search for his first League One goal of the campaign.

The Tractor Boys doubled their lead just after the half hour mark. Edwards, who played a key part in Ipswich Town’s first goal, found space on the left before firing a low right-footed effort past Maxwell to give Blackpool a mountain to climb in the second half.

The momentum was with Ipswich Town and they scored their third goal in quick succession. Teddy Bishop won the ball back deep inside Blackpool’s half, before ending his positive run with a curling left-footed finish.

Half-time: Blackpool 0-3 Ipswich Town

Critchley’s side managed to grab one back just before the hour mark. Gabriel, who put some inviting crosses in from the right hand side throughout, produced another dangerous ball into the box, which was eventually met by Madine. The striker pounced onto a loose ball inside the area to grab his first goal of the season and a potential route back into the game for the Tangerines.

The Seasiders responded positively in the second half and almost got another goal back with just over 15 minutes remaining. Madine struck a fierce effort towards goal, but Ipswich goalkeeper Thomas Holy was equal to it to deny the forward his second goal of the afternoon.

Despite a spirited second half performance from the hosts, Ipswich Town grabbed their fourth goal to put the game beyond doubt. Edwards delicately controlled a cross field ball from Chambers, before dispatching the ball past Maxwell to reclaim the Tractor Boys’ three goal lead.
