Report: Blackpool 2-3 Lincoln City

3 October 2020

Blackpool fell to defeat at Bloomfield Road as Lewis Montsma’s late winner earned Lincoln City all three points.

Blackpool fell to defeat on Saturday afternoon as Lincoln City came from behind at Bloomfield Road to extend their unbeaten start to the season. CJ Hamilton scored his third goal of the season to put the Seasiders in control, before Jorge Grant equalised from the penalty spot. Demetri Mitchell scored his first goal of the season to give Critchley’s side the lead in the second half, but two late goals from Grant and Lewis Montsma earned the visitors all three points.

Neil Critchley’s men were looking to continue their momentum at Bloomfield Road, after their 2-0 victory over Swindon Town last time out. The visitors, meanwhile, we’re looking to continue their impressive start to the season after three consecutive victories to kickstart the 20/21 season.

Blackpool, who made one change following their encounter against Gillingham, started the game on the front foot at Bloomfield Road in difficult conditions. The Seasiders had their first glimpse on goal just after 10 minutes, CJ Hamilton’s cushioned lay off was met by Jerry Yates, but the forward’s fierce half volley struck the post to deny him his first goal in Tangerine.

The hosts continued to put the pressure on in search of the breakthrough and it eventually paid dividends. Jerry Yates capitalised on a Lincoln City mistake, before Hamilton collected the ball and fired his left footed effort past the reach of goalkeeper Alex Palmer to score his third goal of the season.

Though, Blackpool’s hard work was undone shortly after. Brennan Johnson was brought down by Demetri Mitchell inside the area, before Jorge Grant stepped up to dispatch the penalty past Chris Maxwell.

An entertaining first half at Bloomfield Road presented a handful of chances for both teams, with Michael Appleton’s side almost taking the lead just before the interval. Johnson, who looked lively on the right-hand side, found space before firing a right-footed effort just over the bar.

Half-time: Blackpool 1-1 Lincoln City

The Seasiders started the second half as they started the first and almost regained the lead on the 48th minute. Keshi Anderson’s pass found Hamilton in-behind the Imps defence and through on goal, but the midfielder’s effort went just wide of the post to deny the summer signing his second goal of the game.

Yates, who came close for Blackpool in the first half, looked lively throughout and came close to putting Critchley’s side ahead just before the hour mark. The forward cut inside from the right and curled an audacious left footed effort towards goal from the edge of the box, but his effort went narrowly wide of Palmer’s goal following a good passage of play from the Seasiders.

Luke Garbutt and Oliver Sarkic both came on for the Seasiders for their League debuts in the hope of finding the winning goal. Though, it was the visitors who came the closest to taking the lead with 15 minutes remaining. James Jones’ effort was well saved by Maxwell, before the goalkeeper made another save in quick succession to deny Tom Hopper from close range.

Blackpool’s pressure eventually reaped its reward as Demetri Mitchell put the Seasiders in front with ten minutes remaining. The left-back managed to get the last touch inside the area to poke the ball past the reach of Palmer.

Though, two goals in quick succession for the visitors stole all three points at Bloomfield Road to extend their unbeaten start to the season. Grant’s penalty pulled the Imps level with five minutes remaining after James Husband was shown a straight red card, before Lewis Montsma scored his third league goal of the season to put the visitors in front after finishing from close range.
