Report: Plymouth Argyle 1 Blackpool 0

12 September 2020

Blackpool suffered a narrow defeat in their 20/21 curtain raiser against Plymouth Argyle on a frustrating afternoon at Home Park.

Plymouth Argyle marked their return to League One action with immediate effect, taking the lead inside the first five minutes at Home Park. Luke Jephcott met Will Aimson’s inviting cross from the right-hand side to give Ryan Lowe’s side the advantage early on.

Neil Critchley’s men responded positively as the Seasiders searched for an equaliser. CJ Hamilton reacted quickly to the loose ball, before breaking with pace. Though, the winger’s effort was well-saved by Michael Cooper.

Hamilton showed his final third qualities and grew into the game as the first half went on. His cross picked out Jerry Yates unmarked, but the forward failed to direct his header on target from eight yards out after an impressive move from the Seasiders.

Blackpool continued to create chances, but Cooper was more than equal to them. Sullay Kaikai’s goal-bound free-kick was turned past the post just after the half hour mark, before the goalkeeper also denied Hamilton his first goal of the season minutes later after Keshi Anderson’s pass played him through on goal.

The visitors controlled large parts of the first half but lacked the finishing touch as Critchley’s men went into the break a goal down.

The hosts continued to be resolute in their defending as Blackpool struggled to create any clear-cut chances in the second 45 minutes. Bez Lubala and Dan Kemp were both brought on for their League One debuts in the hope of engineering a comeback.

The visitors came the closest to equalising with 15 minutes remaining. Anderson anticipated the loose ball and directed a fierce shot towards goal from the edge of the box, but Cooper pulled off an excellent save to deny the midfielder his first Blackpool goal.

Despite having chances throughout, Plymouth held on to inflict defeat on the Seasiders after a frustrating afternoon for Critchley’s side.
