Youth Team Report: Blackpool 1 Oldham Athletic 0

25 April 2021

The youth team ended April on a high, running out as 1-0 winners against Oldham Athletic in the North West Youth Alliance on Saturday.

Luke Mariette celebrated signing his first professional contract with a goal, as his first-half strike was enough to see the Seasiders home in a well-contested fixture.

Prince Yelegon and Arnold Matshazi came into the side while Charlie Penman continued his run in the team, starting his third consecutive game. Jack Moore also returned from suspension.

Oldham had the first sight on goal when Tayt Trusty gave a foul away just outside ‘Pool’s 18-yard box. Joe Edwards stepped up but floated the set-piece over the bar.

From then on in, the young Seasiders grew into the game with James Harrison going close, though his effort deflected off an Oldham shirt and out for a corner. Rob Apter whipped the corner in towards Sky Sinclair, whose looping header was cleared off the line, denying him the opener.

Then the breakthrough. Out of nowhere, Luke Mariette came hurtling towards the Oldham goal to catch the Latics in possession. He then raced through on goal and slotted calmly past Kacper Danielewicz.

It was a half of few chances, with Mariette’s goal being the difference going into the interval.

Half-Time: Blackpool 1 Oldham Athletic 0

The Seasiders were full of energy in the opening stages of the half, and that lead to Mariette and his midfield partner Trusty combining on the edge of the area, with the latter taking a swipe at goal but firing wide.

Matshazi, on his return to the side, was leading the line well alongside Yelegon. The number ten superbly turned his man to find the target, though his effort didn’t trouble Danielewicz.

It was a solid team performance from Danny Ventre’s side. This time, Junior Luamba burst down the left at lightning speed and was free upon entering the area, but Moore recovered excellently to stop the winger in his tracks.

Again in the second half, Trusty had another opportunity in front of goal, though Danielewicz had other ideas and kept him out with a point-blank save.

Looking to make sure of the points and a second goal in the game, Mariette received a corner played short by Apter to clip a ball to the back post and Trusty, who couldn’t quite latch onto the cross.

In a quiet final 20 minutes, Oldham had one last chance with a free-kick 20-yards from goal - however, Vani Da Silva struck the wall.
