Youth Team Report: Walsall 1 Blackpool 1

7 April 2021

The young Seasiders were held to a 1-1 draw away at Walsall on Tuesday, with Danny Ventre’s men coming from behind to earn a point.

Saif Mukadam put the Saddlers ahead after 10 minutes before Rob Apter levelled matters to give his side a valuable point on the road.

The trip to the West Midlands saw Brad Holmes and Apter return to the side after spending several weeks with Neil Critchley’s side.

Perez Goumou came in to replace the suspended Jack Moore. Charlie Monks returned from injury, while Charlie Penman and Luke Byron were both handed starts.

And it didn’t take long for Apter to get involved in the thick of things, as Charlie Penman whipped a dangerous ball to the back post towards the wide midfielder, though Tommy Jackson came and gathered.

With the game starting to open a little, Walsall took advantage when Mukadam worked his way into the area and poked a shot towards goal, which on its way through came off a Blackpool shirt and past Charlie Monks.

The Seasiders reacted well after the goal. Holmes found time to swivel and strike a volley goalwards, but Jackson held well.

Apter was then presented an opportunity to cut in on his left foot and hit a well-driven strike into the arms of Jackson.

Persistence paid off for Apter. Initially, he glided past his man to roll a ball into the feet of Holmes; the striker turned his man and shot, which Jackson saved. Luke Byron then had a go – Jackson saved again. However, it was third time lucky, as Apter followed up and prodded the ball home to bring ‘Pool level.

Holmes came alive just before the break, bursting in on goal only to be stopped in his tracks by Joe Foulkes, who received a yellow card for his antics.

Half-Time: Walsall FC 1-1 Blackpool

Danny Ventre’s team talk had his side fired up for the second half, and they started on the front foot. Apter switched play to James Harrison in on goal, though Jackson was equal to his strike from inside the area.

Involved in the majority of attacking play, Apter received the ball from a throw-in, turned his man but could only curl an effort wide of the post.

The hosts then started to turn the tide. Ben Dallaywaters' free-kick struck the wall from 20-yards out, starting a flurry of attacks for the Saddlers.

Substitute Ronan Maher then found himself free beyond the Blackpool defence, though he could only find the side netting of Monks’ goal.

Moments before the end, Walsall decided to have one last throw of the dice through Jayden Campbell, but he rifled an effort wide of the goal.

Full-Time: Walsall FC 1-1 Blackpool

Blackpool: Monks, Goumou (87’ Squires), Penman, Sinclair, Fitzgerald, Trusty (65’ Matshazi), Apter, Mariette, Holmes, Byron, Harrison (65’ Daniels).
