Matt Phillips On Promotion Rivals

10 August 2012

Winger wary of 'strongest ever' Championship

Blackpool’s Matt Phillips is backing the Seasiders for an automatic promotion push, but says the Championship could well be even stronger than last season.

Pool came within a whisker of an instant return to the Premier League, only to be denied by West Ham and a late Ricardo Vaz Te goal at Wembley.

But with Phillips and his team-mates over that disappointment, on the back of a tough pre-season, he believes the squad are in good shape for another tilt at promotion.

“I think we’ve bought in some good players and the manager has got a big squad to pick from,” he said.

“We’ve got good depth and a lot of quality in most positions and that will be a big advantage because it’s a long, tough season ahead.”

Along with the sides who missed out on the play-offs and automatic promotion in last season’s Championship, Blackpool will be joined by relegated trio Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers and Wolves.

All three are expected to be in contention and the 21-year-old is under no illusions as to the task ahead.

“The quality in the division is unbelievable,” he continued.

“Blackburn have bought really well and will be a strong side, as will the other two teams who came down.

“But there’s plenty of sides who we faced last season who will fancy their chances, Leicester have spent a lot of money over the past two summers and I don’t think they will be too far away.

“Money isn’t always everything, though, and we know we’ve got a good, settled side and we’re confident about what we can do.”
