Winger hoping to emulate team-mateMatt Phillips says he has been keeping a close eye on team-mate Kevin Phillips in a bid to continue his goalscoring exploits this season.
After waiting over 12 months to add to his debut Blackpool strike, a goal-filled loan spell at Sheffield United and a December hat-trick away at Barnsley kick-started his most prolific campaign to date.
But far from content with an impressive 12-goal haul, Phillips has spent pre-season honing his skills in front of goal, alongside namesake and team-mate Kevin.
“You can watch people on TV and see how they finish but we’ve got one of the best finishers in the game at our club in Kevin Phillips,” he said.
“To watch him when he was in Portugal and all last season was a great experience. He hits the target and scores goals and it’s wonderful to watch.
“It’s great to have him alongside you, when he goes through he looks like he doesn’t even have to think, he just knows what he’s going to do and he finishes very, very well.”
The 21-year-old’s tally could have been even greater, but for the finest of margins in the play-off final defeat to West Ham and he says it is a part of his game that is far from complete.
“My finishing is something that I’ve improved on but it’s something that I think I need to still work on.” Phillips continued.
“Tommo (Steve Thompson) has said from day one that he’ll stay behind with me and work on my finishing and I’m going to keep on doing that.
“Goals bring confidence and once you’ve got that level of confidence and you’re playing every week then more goals come and that’s what happened last season.
“I play in a side that is always going to create chances and the more of them I can get on the end of and the more I work on my finishing, the more goals I’ll score.”
