Kev Phillips Delighted To Be Back

15 November 2012

Striker Ready For More Action

Kevin Phillips is delighted to be back in full training and hopes to build on his 10-minute return against Bolton Wanderers last weekend.

The 39-year-old had been out of action since the start of October with a calf injury but he now hopes to get his season fully back on track.

"I'd missed the last five or six games so it was great to be back amongst it," he said. "There have been big changes since I last played so I was naturally delighted to be back out there and to get 10 minutes.

"Hopefully I can stay injury-free now. I feel good, I feel sharp and I've had a good week's training last week, 10 minutes at the weekend and a good week's training this week. I'll be up for hopefully getting more minutes over the coming weeks and the busy Christmas period."

The past seven days have been interesting to say the least, with Michael Appleton taking charge of first-team affairs following the departure of Ian Holloway to Crystal Palace. The new manager is someone that Phillips already knows from his time at West Brom.

"I know Appy because he was in charge of the youth team while I was at West Brom. Although I met him, I never really watched his training sessions but what I've seen so far has been very enjoyable," he admitted. "Training has been high intensity, which we've needed, and we're walking off the pitch knowing that we've worked extremely hard. It's been so far, so good. The lads are enjoying it and that's what you want.

"I said to him when he first walked through the door, 'you've got good players here, there's not an awful lot wrong'. Normally when managers go to clubs they're going there because the club is maybe sitting at the bottom of the league, or second from bottom. He just needs to tweak a few things and I think he's right about the fitness side. The lads will naturally get fitter and hopefully that will show in games," he added.
