Blackpool Come From Behind To Beat Tranmere
The Ladies returned to the top of the league with a fine 2-1 victory over the previously unbeaten Tranmere Rovers. In doing so they had to come from behind, sealing the victory early in the second half.
The Seasiders had a couple of early opportunities with Danni Cross & Lauren Oatley both firing wide of the target.
The visitors then had an effort wide before opening the scoring on 15 minutes; a dangerous cross from the left was headed into the bottom right-hand corner despite Steph Findlay getting a hand to it.
Pool searched for an equaliser but Jones' free-kick went narrowly wide of the target.
Clare Kilner had a couple of chances, the first testing the Tranmere keeper and the other flying just wide of the mark with her well struck shot from distance.
The well deserved leveller came on 35 minutes when Cross played in Oatley, who cleverly beat a defender and finished low across the keeper.
That was the last meaningful action of the first-half meaning the sides went in level at the interval.
Just two minutes into the second period Blackpool took the lead. An Oatley corner was only partially cleared and when the ball fell to Charlotte Banner and she confidently stoked the ball home.
It was now Tranmere’s turn to search for an equaliser but they struggled to really test Findlay in the Blackpool goal.
Pool then looked to extend their lead also as Mac Barlow and Cross both had attempts, the former also hitting the bar from Oatley's cross.
Olivia Turnbull, playing in front of the back four headed successive Tranmere crosses clear with Kilner then unlucky with her free kick that went just over the bar.
The Blackpool backline of May, Banner, Jones and Ambrose were strong all afternoon and were a big part of protecting the slender lead.
With 15 minutes remaining Cross made way for Sian Dillon who was soon involved in the action as she got on the end of Barlow's cross at full stretch but her shot was gathered with ease.
Into stoppage time and Tranmere continued to probe but the Ladies remained resolute and the game ended 2-1 to Blackpool.
