7-2 Victory Over City Of Manchester
Blackpool Ladies continued their impressive start to the season with a 7-2 home win against City of Manchester, but had to come from behind in the process.
The visitors started strongly before taking the lead in the opening 10 minutes, when a shot from distance bounced in off the cross bar. Their lead could have been extended but for Steph Findlay in the home goal palming a free kick clear.
Subsequent City of Manchester corners were cleared by the Pool defence with the home side’s first real effort coming on 20 minutes. A shot from Danni Cross was well saved by the City ‘keeper, who pushed it clear for a corner.
Findlay was soon called into action again, preventing City from doubling their lead with an excellent tip over the bar.
The equalising goal came on 26 minutes - Chrissi Bradshaw’s excellent ball found Lauren Oatley who made no mistake with her finish into the bottom corner. Bradshaw again delivered an excellent cross but nobody could capitalise.
At the other end Findlay again did well to smother in advance of the visiting striker. The City of Manchester keeper then did the same gathering a Sarah Jones ball just before Sian Dillon was able to strike. Further opposition efforts went wide of the target with Mac Barlow then hitting the post from a Jones through ball. The last action of the half saw Barlow deliver across the box with nobody able to provide the finishing touch, ensuring that the scores remained level at the interval.
Into the second half Gaby May’s through ball for Cross was dinked over the keeper but just wide of the target with an Oatley effort parried for a corner. Good interplay between Dillon & Cross saw the former head just wide. The forward was not to be denied for long though, as she fired home from an Oatley corner moments later.
Cross then increased the lead to 3-1 running on to a ball down the line, riding a defender’s tackle before cutting back inside to finish.
On 70 minutes Clare Kilner replaced Dillon. Shortly after the visitors reduced the deficit an effort initially cleared slotted home with the follow up.
Kilner then restored the two goal lead, after intercepting as the visitors attempted to play the ball out of defence.
The fifth goal saw an Olivia Turnbull ball into the box fumbled by the keeper, with substitute April Oldfield following up. A quick Barlow free kick was finished by Oatley for 6-2 with Oldfield rounding off an emphatic victory with her effort from distance.
The Ladies next game is again a home fixture at Wyre Villa on Sunday 23rd September at 2pm with Crewe the opposition.
