Match Preview: Barnsley

Seasiders Head To Oakwell

Blackpool travel to Barnsley tomorrow looking to bounce back after the defeat suffered on their last outing, away at Leicester two weeks ago.

The Seasiders welcome back Ian Evatt from a foot injury, which he picked up in the opening day victory at Millwall, while Nathan Eccleston and Kirk Broadfoot are also available for selection for the first time since signing deals with the club.

The corresponding fixture last season took place on Boxing day and it was Matt Phillips who managed to spread a bit of late Christmas cheer with a hat-trick in the Seasiders’ 3-1 win.

That win came in the middle of a period where Blackpool only lost one game in twelve, beginning at the start of December and ending in the middle of February.

Overall the Seasiders have faced the Tykes 92 times in competitive matches with Blackpool winning 28, drawing 24 and losing 40.

Last Season’s Meetings

9 April 2012 – Blackpool 1-1 Barnsley

26 December 2011 – Barnsley 1-3 Blackpool

So far this season the Tykes are yet to concede a goal at Oakwell after a 1-0 win on the opening day against Middlesbrough and another 1-0 win, last time out against Bristol City.

Their results on the road have been a different story though, with Keith Hill’s men losing 3-1 at Wolves and 5-1 to Gus Poyet’s Brighton.

Barnsley finished one place and eight points clear of the relegation zone last season. Things may have been different for the Yorkshire outfit though, should Portsmouth, who ultimately finished 22nd, not have suffered a ten-point penalty for falling into administration.

Stat Attack

Blackpool are the league’s top scorers with ten goals in four matches so far this term.

Barnsley are yet to concede a goal at Oakwell this season, having enjoyed two 1-0 wins in their opening two home games.

Blackpool’s most common away result last season was 2-2, which occurred on six occasions. The next most frequent were 3-1 wins, which happened on four occasions, including the Boxing day victory at Barnsley.

Thomas Ince is just two goals away from equalling his tally from last season for league goals. The young winger scored six in the Championship last year.

Andy Woolmer (Northamptonshire)

The last time Mr. Woolmer refereed a game involving Blackpool was the away fixture at Coventry City in September 2011, which ended 2-2.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher scored the opener in that game only for the Seasiders to fall behind with two goals in five second half minutes, before a last minute header from Keith Southern earned Ian Holloway’s side a point.
