Ince: Strikers Need Mini Pre-Season

22 August 2013

Manager Looks To Get New Arrivals Up To Speed

Paul Ince says the looming international break will be a key period for The Seasiders, with the manager looking to get a number of new arrivals up-to-speed.

Michael Chopra, Nathan Delfouneso, Ricardo Fuller and Bobby Grant all featured in a behind-closed-doors fixture at Bury in midweek, in an effort to build up some match sharpness.

"It was an exercise programme more than anything, it wasn't about the result," Ince said of the 6-2 victory. "It's nice that Fonzy got a couple of goals and Chops because it breeds confidence. They're so far behind in their fitness work they will have to keep playing these games until they get themselves up to scratch."

The manager plans to put his new recruits, who have missed out on a full pre-season, through a mini one once the next two home fixtures are out of the way.

"Chopra has not played any games when he was at Ipswich, that was the same for Steve Davies, the same for Ricardo Fuller - he hasn't trained for two or three weeks before he even came to us - and Delfouneso has had one game for Aston Villa since he's come back from pre-season. As much as on paper they are very good strikers, they're not very fit strikers.

"The international break can't come quick enough for me because it will allow them to then have a mini pre-season and get them up to where they should be," he added.
