Steve Thompson has confirmed that Mark Halstead will be given a chance to stake a claim between the sticks on Saturday.

The 22-year-old, who grew up watching The Seasiders, is set to add to the 24 minutes he had a Bloomfield Road last weekend as he deputises for the suspended Matt Gilks against Millwall.

Although he has only made three competitive appearances for Blackpool previously, Thompson has backed him to take his opportunity with both hands.

"If you're not going to play Mark Halstead then there's no point having him at the club," he said. "He's trained and he's done absolutely fantastic so I've no hesitations whatsoever, I've got 100 per cent faith in the lad.

"I've got full belief in him because I know what the lad can do. There will be no pressure on him, he came on last weekend and made a fantastic save. It's a great opportunity for him and he needs to show now what he's all about. He came through the youth ranks and he's a person that you can rely on," he added.

Halstead's last senior start for Blackpool came back in August 2011, with the stopper keeping a clean sheet in a League Cup tie at Sheffield Wednesday.
