Tommo: Let's Build On Fulham Performance

18 January 2013

Caretaker Boss Previews Cardiff Fixture

Steve Thompson is looking for Blackpool to build on their showing against Fulham and get their season back on track against Cardiff City tomorrow (Saturday).

The Seasiders' Caretaker Boss was pleased with a number of aspects in the FA Cup defeat to the Premier League outfit, especially in attack. The challenge now is to beat the current Championship table toppers and push back up the league.

"We've got to take that performance into tomorrow (Saturday) against Cardiff, and it's the perfect scenario against the top team at the moment to try and kick-start our season," he said. "We know that it's going to be a very tough game, they're up there for a reason, but we've got to go out there and show people what we're all about."

Some morning snow obviously hampered training a little at Squires Gate this morning, although ball work wasn't at the top of the agenda for the players.

"We've done a video session on Cardiff and it's probably the first time I've ever said that this is more important than what we do on the grass," Thompson admitted. "Although it's not been ideal out there, we did the video session for 30 minutes and then we did 25 minutes of shape with the team on the pitch. It's probably a bit of a blessing that it's not as long on the legs after the extra-time the other night."

One individual who has benefited from some time on the grass this week is Matt Phillips, with the winger taking his first steps to a return following two months out injured. Although unlikely to feature this weekend, his impeding return is a timely boost.

"When you get Incey and Matt Phillips on the pitch, in my eyes, I think you've got probably the two best wingers in the division. I've worked with them, they're very exciting and there's still a lot to come from them because they're young boys. We've got to be careful with Matt so that we don't rush him back too much. He's trained but we'll just have to see how he is. He's a great asset for us," Thompson added.
