Midfielder Hopes To Feel Benefits
Chris Basham believes that a real emphasis on fitness this pre-season is exactly what The Seasiders need.
Currently out in Portugal for the third year in a row, the midfielder is lifting plenty of weights and taking in Pilates and Yoga sessions with the rest of the lads.
"With me being tall it's tough but it's good and it's something that we need to focus on this year to stop injuries and stuff like that," he said. "If we can keep going at it then we'll slowly get better at it. Obviously some lads are more flexible than others but hopefully we can all be good.
"We've done a lot of football stuff but it's been based on fitness and leg work so it's been really tough. We've split the groups up a bit but the emphasis has been on fitness and power. We're doing weights very early and that's all based on power and technique."
All the players returned in decent shape for the new campaign following several tests, with Basham finishing in the top three on the bleep test.
"When we went away we got a fitness programme to stick to off the gaffer and although I didn't stick to it properly, I stuck to it as much as I could. I've come back quite sharp and feeling quite fit so I just need to look after myself over the next few weeks."
The main objective for the 24-year-old is to start the new season as he ended the last - in the team.
"I didn't start the season last year until around October time and I think I played mostly every game. This will be the first year where, hopefully, I'll get to hit the ground running. I hope the gaffer keeps me in mind for the first game of the season," he added.
