Defender On Pre-Season Training
Craig Cathcart believes that two weeks of nothing but pre-season training will help minimise the risk of injuries when the games start to come.
The Northern Ireland international is currently away with the Blackpool squad in Portugal for some warm-weather fitness work, which is all geared towards hitting peak condition.
Early fixtures can be problematic at this time of year, hence why Cathcart is happy to wait until Saturday 6 July for his first run-out.
"There's less risk of injuries if you're more prepared for the games," he told the official website. "You have a better base fitness going into the first game, so it's always good to get a few weeks of good training in before any matches.
"It's been tough work out in the Portugal heat. We've had three sessions a day and we're laying good foundations for fitness, with the games starting next week. Everyone is looking good and we're getting better everyday."
The 24-year-old made 26 appearances for The Seasiders last season but found opportunities limited towards the end of the campaign following the arrival of Gary MacKenzie.
"Overall last season I thought I performed pretty well and I was pretty consistent when I played," he said. "A little bit of misfortune - I was a little bit unlucky here and there - and I missed out on one game and the lads that came in did really well. That was that really and I couldn't get back in the side. When I did come back in towards the end of the season I thought I acquitted myself well and I'm hoping to do that this season.
"I just need to stay away from niggly injuries and play consistently. I'm the only centre-half here at the minute and I'm sure the manager will want to bring in a few more players. Hopefully he does that over the next few weeks and we can integrate people into the squad as quickly as possible."
