Manager On Importance Of Summer Workout
Paul Ince will join up with the squad in Portugal later in the week, as he continues his work on his UEFA Pro-Licence in Turkey, but the players won't be short of work while the manager is away as they undertake double training sessions every day.
It is around 30 degrees Celsius in the Algarve in the day, but that won't stop the coaching staff from putting the players through their paces ahead of the new season.
"We've brought in a new fitness coach who really knows his stuff," said the manager.
"It's going to be a different regime this year because I don't think they did enough fitness and weight sessions last year.
"If we can get a strong team and improve them mentally and physically then we'll be OK."
Matt Murray is another new face that has been added to the coaching setup for the trip to Portugal and Ince is keen for the former Wolves stopper to improve the fitness of the goalkeepers as well as develop training methods.
"Kelham (O'Hanlon) has gone to work in America so we have taken Matt Murray over to Portugal.
"Matt was at Wolves with me, he was a fantastic keeper and has done a lot of work with Bobby Mimms so he knows a lot about goalkeeping coaching.
"We will see what he is like and see if the keepers like him because that is what it's about - having a relationship with the people that you work with.
"It's important that they get the right stuff into the goalkeepers because even last year the keepers didn't work hard enough fitness-wise and I think that Matt will give that to them, so it's quite exciting to see how that goes."
