Manager On Pre-Season And Barry Ferguson Signing
Paul Ince is optimistic ahead of pre-season that more players will join the likes of Barry Ferguson and Mark Halsead in signing deals with The Seasiders.
A number of players were out of contract at the end of last season, so it was pleasing for the Pool boss when Ferguson put pen to paper on a new one-year contract earlier this week.
"Barry signing was important for me as he did well when he came in last year," said Ince.
"There was obviously a bit of a lull after Michael Appleton going and Holloway leaving before that.
"He came in and lifted the place; they needed someone, not just to lead them as a team but to lead the changing room and I think Barry had a massive influence on that and you could see that in his performances.
"It makes you wonder why he didn't play most of the games to be honest, but that's another story. For me, in terms of what he gave us last year, he was probably one of the major ones I wanted to get signed.
"I want to keep the core as much as I possibly can as we've got some great trainers and great characters."
Pre-season has started today, with the players being put through their paces immediately by Ince and the coaching side as the manager looks to prepare The Seasiders for the start of the new season.
"I think the difficult part is that I'm probably not like most managers in this league in the fact that we had so many players out of contract at the end of the season.
"As a manager you want to prepare right because of the situation we find ourselves in last season. You can't prepare as well as you would like to as you're chasing around and playing catch up, but we've got to make sure we get the right players in.
"It's not easy and it's going to take time but we've got to make sure we get the right players in."
