Fit2Go Festival Takes Place

31 May 2013

More Than 1,200 Year 4 Pupils Take To The Pitch

More than 1,200 Year 4 pupils from local Primary Schools took to the Bloomfield Road pitch over three days earlier this month, as part of the Fit2Go programme.

Fit2Go is delivered delivered in schools as part of Altogether Now – a legacy for Blackpool, the multi-partnership programme between the NHS in Blackpool (Clinical Commissioning Group and Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust), Blackpool Football Club and Blackpool Council. The aim of Altogether Now is to improve the health and wellbeing of every person in the town, with Fit2Go specifically targeting key stage 2 pupils.

Funded by NHS Blackpool and the Premier League/Professional Footballers Association Community Fund, Fit2Go involves a range of activities delivered in school and community settings, one of which was the Festival on The Seasiders' pitch.

Over six weeks, the Fit2Go team deliver six classroom and physical activity sessions in each primary school. Pupils spend each classroom session being guided through a bespoke workbook with caricatures of Blackpool FC players touching on a different subject each week; Healthy lifestyles; It’s all about balance; Eat well; Snacks and drinks; Physical activity; and It’s your choice, hopefully widening the pupils’ knowledge on all aspects of being healthy.

After the six weeks of delivery each school has a visit from members of the Blackpool FC first-team to sign workbooks and take photos as a treat for their hard work and efforts, as well as Blackpool FC prizes including tickets and Fit2Go merchandise. Parents are then invited into school to see what the children have been learning - quite often with them leaving with more knowledge than when they came in too!

By the end of July, every primary school in Blackpool will have received the full programme over the school year and Fit2Go will have hopefully influenced the behaviour of the young people and their families, showing them how to live a healthier lifestyle.
Aside from the school delivery, fully qualified coaches deliver six multi-sport community sessions every week across Blackpool completely free of charge, enabling young people aged 7-11 to take part in some of their favourite activities. See the timetable below for where and when to attend.

Monday - Talbot and Brunswick Sports Barn, FY1 3NE - 5pm–6.30pm
Tuesday - Bispham Endowed Primary School, FY2 0HH - 4.30pm–5.30pm
Tuesday - Revoe Primary School, FY1 5HP - 4.30pm–6pm

Schools attended the festival on the pitch, which takes place annually in groups of approximately 250, enjoying different activities throughout the day. Activities included football, tag rugby and lots of different athletics disciplines, on top of educational sessions in the Sponsors Lounge recapping the work done in school and full stadium tours.

We would like to thank all of our volunteers that helped out over the three days, from our very successful NCS programme, as well as coaches from Fylde Rugby Club and Blackpool Wyre and Fylde Athletics Club, who helped make the event so enjoyable and run so smoothly.

The Fit2Go team are looking forward to delivering next year again in every Primary School in Blackpool.
