Youth Team Put Seven Past Morecambe

21 October 2013

Biggest Win Of Season So Far

The youth team recorded their biggest win of the season so far on Saturday - beating basement side Morecambe 7-1 in the North West Youth Alliance.

Harrison McGahey scored a hat-trick, adding to Henry Cameron’s two goals, while Mark Waddington and the in-form George Lomax both got one.

Pool were four goals up before Morecambe registered a strike, and the win delighted Academy Manager Ciaran Donnelly after a low goals-to-game ratio.

“It was an excellent result for us,” said Donnelly. “Playing Morecambe, who have been struggling, was a potential banana skin for us. I was worried we might take our foot off the gas.

“We made sure the lads were switched on and told them to get in their faces early on to unsettle them. It broke Morecambe’s spirit a little.”

The young Seasiders had managed just eleven goals in eight Youth Alliance league fixtures ahead of the match – just over an average of a goal a game.

Donnelly felt the goal glut in the game at Lancaster and Morecambe College was also crucial towards Pools goal difference.

“It’s important we got our goal difference up because it’s tight at the top of the table,” he said. “We haven’t conceded many but we needed to score more, so it was a good response from the lads.

“We have been on a good unbeaten run, and Paul Ince has been showing a great interest in the youth team which is brilliant for the confidence of the lads.”

The young Tangerines play a friendly against Lancashire Under-18s on Monday, as Donnelly looks to give game time to those who missed out against Morecambe.
