Pool In Cup Action

Shrewsbury Town v Blackpool
Tuesday 12 August 2014
The Greenhous Meadow

The José Riga era continues on Tuesday night, as Blackpool look to put their opening day defeat behind them with a positive result at Shrewsbury Town.

The Seasiders were beaten at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, so will aim to get off the mark and avoid falling at the first hurdle at the Greenhous Meadow on Tuesday.

Ten players made their Pool debuts at the weekend, and more are expected to follow tonight, as Blackpool target a League Cup victory for the first time in five years.

Riga takes his side to Shrewsbury, who were relegated from League One in May and opened up the new campaign with a draw on the road.

The Shrews are managed by former-Pool midfielder Micky Mellon, who has Mike Jackson as his assistant and Scott Vernon, James Caton and Mark Halstead, previously of Blackpool in his ranks.

It will be Blackpool's first visit to Shrewbury's new home, and should they be needed extra time and a penalty shoot-out will be used.

Team News
Ishmael Miller is set to make his Blackpool debut on Tuesday, but Donervon Daniels and José Miguel Cubero will miss out.

Daniels will be unavailable for The Seasiders having not been granted permission from West Brom to play and the club still awaits a work permit for Cubero

Bobby Grant, Tom Barkhuizen, Gary MacKenzie and Steven Davies are all expected to miss out with injuries again.

As for Town, they are expected to be without Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Liam Lawrence, who were both taken off with injuries at the weekend, while Andy Robinson is also struggling.

In The Build-Up
Blackpool began their season with a 2-0 loss at Nottingham Forest. Two first half goals did the damage on Riga’s first competitive match in charge of the club.

Meanwhile Shrewsbury’s first match back in League Two ended all-square at AFC Wimbledon. James Collins struck twice for The Shrews, as they returned home with a point.

Previous Meetings

The last time the two teams met was way back in April 2001, when Ryan Lowe scored the only goal in a 1-0 Shrewsbury win at the Gay Meadow.

The Shrews had won the previous fixture earlier in the season too, with Nigel Jemson’s penalty earning them three points at Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool’s last victory over Tuesday’s opponents came on New Year’s Day in 1997, when they won 3-1, with Mellon on target for The Seasiders.

Around The Grounds
Derby County are the first team through to round two after a 2-0 win at Carlisle United on Monday.
