Shoot-Out Victory For Former Players

Seasiders Collect Hedzup Charity Shield

Richie Wellens scored the decisive spot-kick as an ex-Blackpool side beat Once Upon a Smile 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out at Bloomfield Road.

The midfielder, who spent five years as a player with the club, stepped up to seal victory in the Hedzup Charity Shield after the 90-minute game finished 3-3.

The Seasiders found themselves two goals up inside the first half-hour as Ben Burgess and Scott Taylor netted, but former Hollyoaks man Nico Mirallegro sprung the offside trap to pull a goal back.

Once Upon a Smile levelled matters prior to half-time when Waterloo Road actor Reece Douglas struck a sensational effort from the edge of the box.

Managed by Derek Spence and Terry Pashley, Blackpool made a string of changes throughout the second-half and had one of the subs, Gary Brabin, to thank for putting the side back in front.

But Once Upon a Smile were not to be outdone, as Nico Mirallegro scored his second of the afternoon to take the game to penalties.

It was left to Mark Halstead to make some key saves in the shoot-out, leaving Richie Wellens with the opportunity to win the overall contest for Blackpool.

Proceeds from the game, which looked to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of brain tumours in children, went to Alder Hey, Ronald McDonald House and Once Upon a Smile.
