Clark Backs Madine To Fire

13 February 2015

Manager On Recent Addition

Lee Clark has been impressed with Gary Madine's initial contribution at Blackpool and believes he will be a good signing for the club.

Madine arrived at Bloomfield Road on loan from Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday and made a 30-minute debut against Middlesbrough that evening.

"I was delighted with his contribution against Middlesbrough, I thought he won he a lot in the air and showed his ability. I think he's going to be a good signing for us," the manager said.

"He's come here on the back of a good loan spell out at Coventry where he's scored four goals in 13 appearances. We're hoping he hits the ground running for us."

The 24-year-old is someone the manager has monitored closely for a number of years, given his North-East links and initial form when breaking through at Carlisle United.

"Gary is someone I’ve followed since his Carlisle days and I was in the running to try and sign him when I was Huddersfield manager. He’s always impressed me with his work ethic for the team and aerial prowess.

"We think he can play an important part for us in the remaining games to help us try and achieve our goal. We did need some more strengthening at the top end of the field and we believe that with Gary we’ve got a player who gives us that."

Madine will look to push for his first start in tangerine tomorrow against a Nottingham Forest side finding form under new manager Dougie Freedman.

"They've had two good wins since Dougie Freedman's gone in there and scored six goals," Clark said. "They've got good wide players, I worked with one of them, Chris Burke, who is a very talented footballer. Antonio has got crazy pace on the other side. It looks like they've lost Assombalonga to quite a serious injury so what they do in terms of replacing him, they've got possibilities. They'll be a team full of confidence with six from six and a new manager.

"But I think our performance warranted more than it got on Tuesday, we've got to continue with a lot of the good things we did in that game and push from there," he added.
