Waddington On First Start

5 January 2015

Midfielder Speaking After Villa Performance

Mark Waddington was both surprised and delighted to be handed his first Blackpool start in Sunday's FA Cup tie at Aston Villa.

The 18-year-old was given the green light by manager Lee Clark just two hours before kick-off, and went on to impress in the Pool midfield.

A regular on the bench in recent weeks, the academy product was finally given his chance from the off, and let nobody down at Villa Park.

“I found out I was starting at 1pm when I left the hotel, so it came as a surprise. I texted my Mum and Dad quickly and they were buzzing,” explained the midfielder.

“It's something I've been working towards for a while. I've been on the bench a few times and kept pushing, the opportunity arrived and hopefully I took it.

“I'm absolutely delighted to play out there against some big names like (Christian) Benteke and (Tom) Cleverley. Hopefully I impressed the manager and I'll go again next week.”

Lady luck deserted The Seasiders at Villa Park as the hosts scored late, but that did little to dampen Waddington's spirits come full time.

“The lads are gutted after taking them so far in the game and then conceding a goal like that, which wasn't anybody's fault, but we'll all bounce back.

“I got on the ball a bit, so overall I was very pleased. We had nothing to lose, so went out there and showed what we could do. We looked to cause an upset, which I thought we could have done.

“The lads are raring to go, we'll keep fighting and see what we can do next week against Millwall,” he said.
