Striker Off The Mark For Pre-Season
While the onus is always on match fitness in the first pre-season friendly, Blackpool’s Mark Cullen admits the two goals he registered at Lancaster City on Saturday were added satisfaction.
The former Luton Town striker netted in either half during his first appearance in a tangerine shirt, starting as he means to go on.
Firing low into the bottom corner early on showcased Cullen’s finishing ability, while his second showed predatory instinct, much to the delight of the supporters on the terraces.
“I always want to score so the fact I’ve got off the mark straight away is a bit of a relief, now I can plough on and get a few more,” said Cullen. “Hopefully the fans liked what they saw.
“That’s what I base my game on, being in and around the box, scoring goals. The first one was a decent little finish and the second one I was in the right place at the right time. Two decent goals and I am happy with them.”
The Lancaster friendly followed two weeks of pre-season training for The Seasiders, which is essential every summer, but Cullen believes it’s now the right time to turn attention to the pitch.
“I’d rather play a game every single day than just running and going to the gym, but you need to do it. It was nice to have a feel for the ball and a little run around.
“It’s the best way to get the rustiness off from the summer. The lads put the graft in so it was a really pleasing start.
“You get your fitness through games and we’ve got a few more coming up so I’m happy with that,” he added.
