The Best Of Brett

2 February 2016

Ormerod's Top Six Blackpool Moments

One of the club’s greatest ever players, Brett Ormerod called time on his playing days last month, drawing a line under a terrific career.

He’s known best for two prestigious spells with The Seasiders, which saw him score in all four divisions and star in the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2010.

Now he sits down with the official Blackpool website to discuss the top six moments of his time in tangerine.

Fixture: Preston North End 1 Blackpool 2
Date: 17 April 1999
Preston had been the better team, they were pushing for promotion and we were mid-table. Adam Nowland scored for us and then the pressure came and they equalised so it seemed like it was getting away from us. Then a cross got whipped to the back post, both of their defenders went to the front post with Junior Bent, so I had a free header and put it in. To score an 89th minute winner in a derby was great, especially as we hadn’t won at Deepdale for 25 years. I just remember being absolutely knackered, I could barely lift my arm to celebrate.

Fixture: Blackpool 3 Hull 1
Date: 12 August 2000
I scored against Hull in my first game back after breaking my leg, I’d been out for a long time after breaking my tibia and fibula. To come back for the first game of the season and to score in a 3-1 win was great.

Fixture: Blackpool 5 Hartlepool United 1 (on aggregate)
Date: May 2001
There’s the semi-finals against Hartlepool, where I scored four goals in two games. We beat Darlington on the last day of the season to get into the play-offs and Hartlepool had beaten us in the league home and away. We won 5-1 on aggregate and ‘Hillsy’ scored the other one, which took us to the Millennium Stadium. We then beat Leyton Orient in the final with a similar pattern to when we beat Cardiff in 2010, but I got us a fourth.

Fixture: Blackpool 2 Norwich 0
Date: 7 March 2009
I scored against Norwich which was my first goal after I returned and that was my 100th league goal. People tried to say I was crossing it but I just went for it and it was a very important game because us and Norwich were both battling against relegation. We were desperate for the three points and they ended up going down. That’s a definitely a highlight.

Fixture: Cardiff City 2 Blackpool 3
Date: 22 May 2010
It’s probably my best memory because I scored the goal which managed to take us to the Premier League. It’s the whole occasion, after the game was probably my best football experience ever. When I watch it on TV it still brings a lump to my throat, obviously with how the first-half went and getting my goal. I came off with about 20 minutes to go and I couldn’t watch the game so I went in the dressing room with Billy Clarke, I was fine playing but when I came off the nerves kicked in. It’s my best memory, I played in the FA Cup final but we didn’t win.

Fixture: Blackpool 3 Tottenham Hotspur 1
Date: 22 February 2011
It was a long time coming because I wasn’t playing regularly by that point. I managed to score against Tottenham and that meant I’d scored in all four divisions for Blackpool. I got so many messages of support after that, it’s something I’m very proud of. I came on as a substitute when we were 2-0 up and I remember Matty Phillips running inside with the ball, I gambled and Benoit Assou-Ekotto turned into me with the ball. I smashed it in and there was pure relief, for me it was great but overall it was another unbelievable highlight for that season.
