Youth Team Edge Seven-Goal Thriller

1 February 2016

Wilson Hits Hat-Trick In Victory

The youth team beat Walsall in a 4-3 thriller on Saturday, with Macauley Wilson hitting a hat-trick for Ciaran Donnelly's side.

It was Elliot Pond who opened the scoring for Blackpool, latching onto a James Doyle’s shot that was blocked in the third minute.

The youth team’s lead was doubled half an hour into the match when Rowan Roache whipped in a free-kick that Wilson headed into the back of the net.

Cameron Peters pulled a goal back shortly afterwards for The Saddlers through a ball over the top of the defence.

Wilson scored again on the stroke of half-time though when he met a ball into the box by Antony Cato after an attacking corner was cleared as far as the midfielder.

Some sloppy defending early in the second half let Walsall back into the match as William Shorrock pulled another goal back for his side.

With the pressure on, Wilson kept his cool to complete his hat-trick with a penalty after Kit Gregory was fouled in the area.

In the dying embers of the match, Walsall scored a third goal through Ashley Maddocks who shot from range, however it proved to be nothing but a consolation effort.

It was a well-earned win for the youth team who played well against a side that are in the upper echelons of the North West Youth Alliance League table.

Ciaran Donnelly said: “I thought we played really well. We played how I want us to play which is with energy, enthusiasm, determination and a willingness to really work for each other on the pitch.

“It’s quite baffling for a right-back to score a hat-trick twice in one season and there’s nothing to say that he can’t do it again.”
