Striker On Friendly Draw
Danny Philliskirk believes Saturday’s pre-season friendly with Blackburn Rovers allowed Blackpool to put Gary Bowyer’s plans into action on the pitch.
It was Pool’s toughest test yet and one they took plenty from, as Kyle Vassell hit the target in a 1-1 draw.
Philliskirk was one of the number of players to catch the eye and he was pleased with the progress The Seasiders displayed.
“It was a great exercise against a Championship club,” he said. “I thought we did very well and was disappointed to draw the game if I’m honest.
“It’s not always about results it’s about performances and I think the lads are starting to gel and taking on board what the Gaffer is asking.
“Setting up as a 4-4-2, we like to get the ball forward early and I thought we were very positive. We created a good few chances and first-half especially we played really well.”
Known for his versatility, but Philliskirk operated behind Vassell in the ‘number 10’ role at Bloomfield Road – something he did to great effect.
“When you’ve got ‘Vass’, who is strong and powerful, up front I’m there to pick up the second balls.
“As a ‘number 10’ in a 4-4-2 you get a lot of the ball and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Gaffer knows I can play wide but I’d say it’s my most effective position.
“First game of the season it’s the manager’s decision what the team is and you’ve got to look in the mirror and say you’ve given everything,” he added.
